NEW DELHI: Smriti Irani, who plays the stern Tulsi Virani in telesoap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and has a social-issues talk show Kuchh Dil Se, talks confidently about her new role. She also sounds more informed than many other contestants.
"Chandni Chowk is a constituency which sees more than 60% polling every election. In that sense, I''m getting one of the most politically aware constituencies in the country," she says.
Irani says she will concentrate on local issues for now.
"Roads, electricity and the wholesale markets are going to be my main targets."
She is also gracious about her opponent — lawyer and Congress spokesman Kapil Sibal. She says she is "honoured" to be contesting against him.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is counting on Smriti Irani''s appeal among women to cut the consolidation of Muslim voters behind Congress. With two articulate combatants, the contest at New Delhi''s Chandni Chowk area has suddenly come alive.
